Local authorities and their role in implementing the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification

Local authorities and their role in implementing the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification

This note was prepared by CARI as part of the GTD and the PASS-LCD Project .1
With a view to COP16, CARI is offering a decoding note based on a reading and analysis of the official documents of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), available at: https://www.unccd.int/convention/official-documents

Local authorities play an essential role in implementing the actions of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) on a local scale, but they are still little present and little heard in international land negotiations. Based on the Convention’s official documents (framework strategies, reports of the Conferences of the Parties, draft decisions), this analytical note aims to demonstrate the importance of mobilizing local authorities within the UNCCD.
