Since its creation in 1998, CARI has made it its mission to combat desertification and land degradation in drylands. Its work aims to reduce poverty, strengthen food security, and improve the resilience of agricultural and food systems by drawing on the principles of agroecology. To achieve this, it carries out its work through three complementary approaches: on-the-ground initiatives, facilitating multi-stakeholder networks, and advocacy for public policy, particularly within the multilateral framework of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.
Amid profound changes in the national and international context, CARI sought to analyze and consolidate its achievements and look toward the future. In 2025, it commissioned a study on the effects and impacts of its 25 years of work, focusing on its overall intervention strategy—namely, the integration of the three approaches it employs: fieldwork, network coordination, and advocacy efforts. The findings of this study, conducted by TERO, aim to highlight CARI’s trajectory and the relevance and coherence of its combined approaches, while drawing lessons from its strengths and weaknesses.
