A pathway to adapting to climate change in drylands

A pathway to adapting to climate change in drylands

Overall objective

The overall objective of the AVACLIM project was to contribute to the development of agroecology in dryland areas, as a tool for climate change adaptation and mitigation, and to enhance long-term food security. This objective will be achieved through improved stakeholder interventions, as well as science-based advocacy for public policies that support the development of agroecology.

Specific intervention area

The AVACLIM project is a multi-country initiative: the main areas of operation were spread across various regions of Brazil, Morocco, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, South Africa and India.

Project objectives
  • To build the capacity of those involved in agroecology by organising exchanges of experience and fostering joint reflection, both at national and international level, drawing in particular on the analysis of agroecological initiatives.
  • To evaluate agroecological initiatives across 14 regions (7 countries), with a view to (i) identifying and measuring the outcomes and impacts of agroecological practices in environmental, agronomic, economic and social terms, and (ii) identifying and analysing the key factors driving their development and success.
  • To develop and implement evidence-based advocacy initiatives, drawing in particular on the evaluation of agroecological initiatives, with a view to promoting public policies that support agroecology at both national and international levels
  • Develop and implement knowledge-sharing and communication initiatives to foster internal momentum within the project and disseminate the results achieved to various target audiences
