Gender within the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification – note

Gender within the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification – note

This note was prepared by CARI as part of the GTD and the PASS-LCD Project.
In the run-up to COP16, CARI is offering a decoding note based on a reading and analysis of the official documents of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), available at: https://www.unccd.int/convention/official-documents

In recent years, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has paid particular attention to integrating the gender equality issues into its actions and policies. In particular, the convention recognizes that men and women are affected differently by desertification, land degradation and drought. Women, particularly in rural areas, often play key roles in natural resource management and agriculture, but they are also more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and land degradation.

Based on the Convention’s official documents (framework strategies, reports of the Conferences of the Parties, draft decisions), this deciphering note aims to show how gender is considered within the UNCCD.
