In Tanzania, the KEA Project Raises Young People’s Awareness of Healthy and Sustainable Food

In the Arusha region, the Kilimo Endelevu Arusha project supports the transition towards a more sustainable food system. Alongside farmers, consumers also have an essential role to play. This is why RECODA is carrying out awareness-raising activities among schoolchildren and the wider public.

Raising Consumer Awareness from an Early Age

What constitutes a healthy diet? Why should we choose local products grown using agroecological practices? What is the connection between our food, soil health and the preservation of natural resources?

These questions are at the heart of RECODA’s activities in primary schools across the Arusha region. Through child-friendly sessions, the teams raise pupils’ awareness of healthy eating and the benefits of agroecological products.

To date, more than 1,850 primary school pupils have taken part in these activities. The knowledge they acquire can then be shared with their families and gradually help to change eating habits.

Cooking Demonstrations to Reach the Wider Public

The campaign is not limited to schools. Events open to the public are also being organised in both rural and urban areas of the Arusha region.

During these events, cooking demonstrations showcase agroecological products and different ways of preparing them. This hands-on approach encourages discussion with consumers about food quality, product origins and farming methods.

These events also help bring producers and consumers closer together. By increasing demand for local and sustainable products, they support market opportunities for family farms engaged in the agroecological transition.

Taking Action Across the Entire Food System

This activity is part of the second phase of the Kilimo Endelevu Arusha project, implemented from 2025 to 2028 by CARI, RECODA and MVIWAARUSHA, with financial support from the French Development Agency.

The project works with farmers in 20 villages in Arusha Rural District. It combines support for family farms, the restoration of degraded land, improvements in local governance and public awareness-raising.

Its ambition is to foster the emergence of a sustainable food system that strengthens people’s food and nutrition security while preserving land and natural resources.

An Ongoing Awareness-Raising Campaign

Awareness-raising activities will continue over the coming years. The campaign led by RECODA aims to reach 1,400 members of the wider public and 7,500 pupils by 2028.

By working simultaneously with producers, consumers, young people and local authorities, the KEA project seeks to create an enabling environment for the sustainable development of agroecology in the Arusha region.

The Kilimo Endelevu Arusha project is coordinated by CARI and implemented in partnership with RECODA and MVIWAARUSHA, with financial support from the French Development Agency.
